Renewing Your License and Registration in NS
The process for renewing your license and registration in Nova Scotia has changed over the years and we’re here to help you stay up-to-date.
Renewing Your License
You must renew your driver’s license every 5 years on or before your birthday. Your expiry date can be found on your driver’s license card. It is your responsibility to ensure that your driver’s license is valid. Renewals must be completed in-person because a new photo must be taken for the license (locations and Contact Information).
It is important to note that all outstanding fines and tickets that appear on your record must be paid, in addition to renewal fees. The process also varies depending on how long your driver’s license has been expired for. For detailed information about renewing your driver’s license, please visit this link on the Government of Nova Scotia website.
Vehicle Registration
Anyone who wants to prove ownership, sell, or transfer any motor vehicle or any off-highway vehicle in Nova Scotia must register. Your vehicle registration does not expire once completed.
The Vehicle Certificate of Registration and the Vehicle Permit are often confused. A Certificate of Registration is your proof of ownership (and is used to sell or transfer a vehicle); buying a Vehicle Permit gets you a set of license plates.
